Russell, Helmig with big offensive night as Axewomen dominate Memorial in road win
Acadia delivered a commanding 92–57 win over the Memorial Sea-Hawks on Saturday night at the Field House, pulling away early and maintaining control throughout. The Axewomen led by as many as 42 points in the fourth quarter, shooting 50 per cent from the field and 80 per cent from the free-throw line.
Acadia also recorded nine blocks and 11 steals, holding Memorial to 22.7 per cent shooting.
Samantha Russell led the Axewomen with 27 points, connecting on 10 field goals and adding three blocks. Bianca Helmig followed with 24 points on 8-for-14 shooting and a perfect 6-for-6 effort from the line. Sarah Delorey added 11 points and two blocks, while Maria Davignon finished with nine points, four assists and two steals.
Memorial was led by Serena Phillips with 16 points and 11 made free throws. Brooke Ledevehat scored 11 points, hit two three-pointers and dished out five assists. Amelia Mitchell contributed 10 points, six rebounds and two steals.
Acadia set the tone in the opening quarter. The Axewomen converted 11 of 19 shots from the field and went a perfect 12-for-12 from the free-throw line. Defensive pressure forced six Memorial turnovers, and Acadia held a 13–6 rebounding edge. By the end of the quarter, the visitors led 35–19.
The Axewomen continued to build in the second quarter, outscoring Memorial 21–12. Acadia turned seven Sea-Hawks turnovers into points and maintained efficient shooting, while Memorial struggled to find rhythm, hitting just 13 per cent from the floor and missing all three-point attempts. Acadia also controlled the glass, finishing the half with another 13–6 rebounding advantage to lead 56–31 at the break.
Acadia extended the margin further in the third quarter, outscoring Memorial 22–9. The Axewomen hit seven three-pointers in the period and forced seven more turnovers. Memorial was limited to two field goals as Acadia's defense added four steals and a block. The lead grew to 78–40 heading into the final frame.
The Axewomen closed out the game in the fourth quarter. Despite Memorial outscoring Acadia 17–14, the visitors remained firmly in control. Acadia added five more blocks and limited the Sea-Hawks to 25 per cent shooting in the period. At the final buzzer, Acadia secured the 92–57 win.
Acadia returns home on Friday, January 24, to host StFX for Shoot for the Cure Night, with tip-off scheduled for 6 p.m.
