Memorial edges Axewomen by two to open weekend doubleheader
WOLFVILLE, N.S. — Acadia fell 68–66 to Memorial on Friday afternoon in AUS women's basketball at Stu Aberdeen Court.
The Axewomen rallied from a five-point first quarter to lead 35–28 at halftime after a 24–12 second frame. Memorial answered with a 20–17 third quarter and closed with a 20–14 fourth to take the win late.
Samantha Russell paced Acadia with 18 points, eight rebounds and six assists. Emily Nunes-Sabean added 16 points and seven boards, while Bianca Helmig had 13 points and five assists. Taya Dixon and Sarah Delorey each scored eight; Delorey grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds.
Memorial's Brooke Ledevehat finished with 22 points, including four threes, and Serena Phillips had 21. Carly Norris posted 14 points, 15 rebounds and five assists.
Acadia outrebounded Memorial 43–33 and made 18 of 25 free throws but shot 31.4 per cent from the field. Memorial hit 32.5 per cent overall and went 6-for-27 from deep. Turnovers favoured Acadia 5–11, but the Seahawks owned a 12–7 edge in second-chance points.
