Acadia outscores X-Men 23-20 in the fourth but can’t overcome early deficit
Acadia dropped an 82–79 decision to St. Francis Xavier University on Saturday night at Stu Aberdeen Court, despite a strong fourth-quarter push. The Axemen outscored the X-Men 23–20 in the final frame but could not erase an early 14-point deficit.
Robbie Grant led Acadia with 19 points, shooting 8-for-12 from the field and adding two steals. Ryan Regault finished with 13 points and six assists before fouling out. Gabe Davignon added 11 points on five made field goals, while Kyle Munro contributed seven rebounds and two steals.
StFX set the tone early, opening the game with a layup from Koat Thomas. Acadia briefly took the lead when Munro connected on a three-pointer off a pass from Donovan Reid, but the X-Men answered with a steady run. Baskets from Phoenyx Wyse and Owen Frayne, combined with strong work in the paint, helped StFX build momentum. The visitors closed the opening half with a 24–14 advantage, capitalizing on defensive rebounds and efficient scoring inside.
StFX continued to control the pace in the second quarter. DJ Jackson extended the lead with free throws and a late layup, while Acadia looked to stay within reach behind Davignon's scoring. Despite the Axemen's efforts, the X-Men maintained their edge and carried a 45–36 lead into the break.
The X-Men pushed their lead to as many as 14 points in the third quarter following a free throw from Jackson. Acadia responded with improved energy, highlighted by a three-point play from Regault and a layup from Briawne Wilson to cut into the margin. StFX answered each run, however, and entered the final quarter ahead 62–56.
Acadia mounted a late charge in the fourth. Aaron Simmons opened the quarter with a layup, and Malko Young later tied the game at 65 with a three-pointer. With the score tight in the final minutes, Grant knocked down a three with 14 seconds remaining to pull Acadia within three. StFX held on at the free-throw line to secure the 82–79 win.
Jackson paced StFX with 20 points, eight rebounds, and nine assists. Wyse added 21 points, 14 rebounds, and four steals, while Thomas finished with 15 points. Frayne chipped in 12 points and two steals.
