Axemen hit century mark in road win over Memorial
Acadia posted a 101–88 win over the Memorial Sea-Hawks on Saturday night at The Works Field House, using efficient shooting and balanced scoring to pull away late.
The Axemen connected on 11 three-pointers and shot 88.0 per cent from the free-throw line in the victory.
Gabe Davignon led Acadia with 20 points and 11 rebounds, knocking down four shots from beyond the arc. Ryan Regault added a game-high 23 points, went 6-for-6 at the free-throw line and grabbed eight rebounds. Robbie Grant finished with 18 points and six rebounds, hitting three of four three-point attempts, while Aaron Simmons chipped in 16 points on 5-of-8 shooting.
The opening half was tightly contested. Ivan Tsafack opened the scoring for Memorial with a three-pointer at 9:14, but Acadia answered with an 11–0 run, fueled by a pair of triples from Grant, to take an 11–5 lead. Memorial responded and tied the game at 14 on a layup by Andrew Robinson.
Acadia closed the half with strong execution inside. Davignon's layup in the final minute pulled the Axemen within one, and Kyle Munro finished a drive with 13 seconds remaining to give Acadia a 26–25 lead at the break.
Davignon opened the second half with a three-pointer to extend the lead, but Memorial stayed close behind timely baskets, including a three from Norm Burry. Acadia maintained control late in the quarter. Regault hit a three with 29 seconds left, and Malko Young followed with a steal and layup to give the visitors a 52–47 edge heading into the final frame.
Acadia pushed the lead early in the fourth. Donovan Reid scored inside to open the quarter, and Regault followed with a jumper after a Memorial response. Josh Reimer brought the Sea-Hawks within four midway through the period with a three-pointer, but Acadia answered down the stretch.
Davignon sparked the closing run with another three, while Simmons and Grant added baskets in transition. Acadia continued to capitalize at the free-throw line and closed the game with a 31–23 fourth quarter to secure the 101–88 win.
Reimer led Memorial with 17 points and seven assists. Jodick Moudiandambu scored 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting. Robinson added nine points, eight rebounds and seven assists, while Javian Downey finished with eight points and five assists.
Acadia returns home next weekend to host STFX on Saturday at 8 p.m.
