Axewomen battle UNB to scoreless draw
Ramirez makes seven saves as Acadia moves to 4-2-1 on the season
WOLFVILLE, N.S. — The Acadia Axewomen played the UNB Reds to a 0-0 draw in Atlantic University Sport women's soccer action Sunday at Raymond Field.
Both teams had chances throughout the 90 minutes but were unable to break through. Acadia registered 12 shots, seven on target, while UNB managed 13 shots, also with seven on goal.
Goalkeeper Milena Ramirez was sharp for Acadia, turning aside all seven Reds attempts to earn the clean sheet. At the other end, UNB's Breanna Habinski matched her with seven saves.
The first half featured early pressure from UNB, including a shot off the crossbar by Lauren Clarke in the fifth minute. Acadia responded with chances from Abby Girard and Riley Bonadie, but Habinski kept the match scoreless heading into halftime.
In the second half, both sides traded opportunities. Ramirez stopped efforts from Julia Currie and Mackenzie Walsh, while Habinski denied Taylor Kay twice, including one cleared off the line by Currie. Bonadie later missed narrowly wide as the Axewomen continued to press.
The Reds closed with a late push, forcing Ramirez into another save in the 90th minute on a shot from Carolina Grzesniak, but the match ended scoreless.
Acadia finished with a 7-1 edge in shots on target over the final 45 minutes but could not convert. The Axewomen also held a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks.
With the result, Acadia moved to 4-2-1 on the season, while UNB stayed unbeaten at 4-0-3.
The Axewomen return to action Sunday, Sept. 28, when they host UPEI at 1 p.m. at Raymond Field.
