Turner goal lifts Axewomen over Moncton
MONCTON, N.B. — The Acadia Axewomen earned a 1-0 victory over the Université de Moncton Aigles Bleues in Atlantic University Sport women's soccer action Friday at Stade Croix-Bleue.
The decisive goal came in the 63rd minute. Jenna Turner finished a pass from Jamie Verhun to break the deadlock and give Acadia the only offence they needed.
The Axewomen pressed throughout the match, outshooting Moncton 9-3, including a 7-0 edge in shots on target. Turner, Verhun, Riley Bonadie and Taylor Kay all tested Moncton goalkeeper Krista Phillips, who finished with six saves to keep the hosts in contention.
Acadia goalkeeper Milena Ramirez was untested, recording the clean sheet without having to make a save.
The first half featured chances for both sides. Verhun forced Phillips into an early save, while Moncton's Lalou Dilhac missed narrowly with a pair of attempts. Acadia's Rachel Kibble delivered four corner kicks, including one late in the half that nearly created a breakthrough, but the teams went into halftime scoreless.
Early in the second half, the match grew physical. Acadia's Hannah Richardson-McKinnon was cautioned in the 49th minute, followed by a yellow card to Moncton's Izabelle Gallant. Gallant was later sent off with a red card in the 79th minute, leaving Moncton to finish with 10 players.
Turner's finish proved the difference, giving Acadia its fourth win of the season and keeping them among the top teams in the AUS standings.
The Axewomen (4-2-0) return home Sunday, Sept. 21, to host the UNB Reds at 1 p.m. at Raymond Field. Moncton fell to 1-4-1 with the loss.
