The Acadia Axewomen (1-1-0) earned their first win of the Atlantic University Sport women's soccer season Sunday, defeating the Mount Allison Mounties (0-2-0) 2-0 at Alumni Field. The victory also marked the first AUS career win for first-year head coach Danielle Cyr.
After a scoreless opening half, Jenna Turner broke the deadlock in the 51st minute with what proved to be the game-winner, finishing off a ball from Alexa Derrick following a corner kick. Taylor Kay doubled Acadia's lead in the 71st minute, scoring just minutes after striking the post on an earlier chance.
The Axewomen outshot the Mounties in the first half, with Rachel Kibble delivering six corner kicks and setting up multiple opportunities. Abby Girard tested the Mounties' back line with three shots, while Sacha Clark had two dangerous headers. Mount Allison goalkeeper Katie Cabot made two saves to keep the game scoreless at the break.
Acadia goalkeeper Milena Ramirez was steady, making two saves to secure the shutout in 90 minutes of action. Defensively, Maeve Williams added a key defensive stop and was shown a yellow card in the 19th minute, while Clark received a caution in the 53rd.
The Axewomen return to action Sept. 5 in Halifax against the Dalhousie Tigers before hosting Mount Allison in their home opener Sept. 7 at Raymond Field.
