Axewomen add internationally experienced scrumhalf Claire MacDonald
Provincial champion and international competitor strengthens backline
The Acadia Axewomen rugby program has added international experience and playmaking ability with the commitment of Langley, B.C., native Claire MacDonald for the upcoming Atlantic University Sport season.
MacDonald, a 5'3 scrumhalf, joins the Axewomen after developing through club, school and academy programs in British Columbia. She plans to study nutrition at Acadia.
MacDonald has competed with Langley RFC since 2019, helping the club capture a provincial championship during an undefeated 2022–23 season. She has also played for R.E. Mountain Secondary and the MacDowell Rugby Academy, continuing to develop her skills at a high level.
Her experience extends beyond provincial competition. MacDonald has competed in elite tournaments across multiple countries, including events in Florida, Mexico, New Zealand and Germany. She has played against international opposition such as Team USA and Māori at the Global Youth 7s, gaining valuable experience against top competition.
MacDonald was also identified as a player to watch at the 2025 Tropical 7s tournament with MacDowell Rugby U18. At just 15 years old, she earned back of the tournament honours at the U19 Mexico Challenge, competing against older athletes on the international stage.
MacDonald said the opportunity to join Acadia allows her to continue both her academic and athletic journey in a supportive environment.
“I chose to continue my academic and athletic career at Acadia because of its welcoming and supportive environment that pushes students to reach their full potential,” she said. “I’m excited to return to my home province and pursue my health-care journey while playing the sport I love.”
“I’m looking forward to growing both as a person and player, and I can’t wait for this next chapter of my career.”
