Former Acadia women’s rugby player Alysha Corrigan was named to the Canada’s rugby sevens squad for the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympic Games on Wednesday in Langford, B.C.
Corrigan spent the 2018-19 season with the Axewomen, which included hosting the U SPORTS women’s rugby championship at Raymond Field. During conference play she finished with five trys and 14 conversions for 53 points, putting her second in AUS scoring.
“It is such a pleasure to see Alysha get selected to the Canadian women’s rugby sevens team set to compete in Paris at the 2024 Summer Olympics,” said Axewomen head coach Matt Durant. “In her time with our program Alysha was such an athletic and physical presence on the field. I am not surprised she is continuing to see great success at the international level. She has been a fixture with our Rugby Canada programs now for years and she just keeps improving. It is always exciting to see an Axewoman make an impact on our Canadian national teams – we wish her and her teammates the best as they represent us in Paris.”
Canada opens the rugby sevens competition on July 28 against Fiji at 12:30 p.m. Atlantic. They finish the day against New Zealand at 4:30 p.m.
Their final Pool A match is July 29 against China at 11 a.m. Quarterfinals will be hosted on July 29 with semifinals and medal matches taking place on July 30.
