Bianca Helmig found a second home - and left her mark on Acadia basketball
The Axewomen guard leaves Wolfville as a record-holder, all-star, and community favourite after four memorable seasons in red and blue.
Over four seasons with the Acadia Axewomen, Bianca Helmig built one of the most accomplished careers in program history while finding a second home more than 5,000 kilometres from where she grew up. The Business Administration graduate leaves Acadia as the program’s all-time assist leader with 347, the all-time leader in assists per game at 4.4, and ninth in career scoring with 959 points. A 2022-23 AUS Rookie of the Year, AUS and U SPORTS all-rookie selection, Helmig later added AUS second-team all-star honours in 2024-25 and first-team recognition in 2025-26. But as convocation approaches, the standout guard says the people, relationships, and sense of belonging she found in Wolfville will mean even more than the records she leaves behind.
As I prepare for convocation, it’s bittersweet to say goodbye to this chapter of my life and career at Acadia.
It feels like just yesterday that I stepped onto the court to compete for the first time as a member of the Acadia Axewomen basketball team.
It’s been a wild ride, and it’s hard to believe it’s all over.
I always dreamed of playing university basketball, but I couldn’t have imagined just how much this experience would mean to me as a student-athlete.
It’s been an honour and a privilege to represent Acadia and be part of such a wonderful community.
There’s a lot to be proud of, but above all, I’m grateful for the people who made this journey so special.
I’ll carry these memories with me forever.
Choosing Acadia and first impressions
It was always my dream to play university basketball, and after one Zoom call with Coach Len, I had a feeling that Acadia was the place for me.
He told me about the wonderful community, and I could tell how much he cared about his players.
Once I arrived in Wolfville, I found that everything he had told me was true.
The community welcomed me with open arms, and I immediately felt at home.
The support I felt from everyone around me was something I had never experienced before.
Wearing the Axewomen jersey for the first time was incredibly special.
The gym quickly became my favourite place, and I couldn’t wait to represent Acadia.
The energy of game day
The home games at Stu Aberdeen Court are some of my favourite memories.
The crowds are always packed, and the energy is electric.
I’ll never forget the feeling of the fans getting louder with each play and all the kids behind our bench looking up to us.
Knowing that we have such a big impact on so many kids’ lives means everything.
And to top it all off, getting to do the thing I love with amazing people is just so much fun.
Growth as an athlete and person
Being a varsity athlete is super challenging.
Balancing classes, exams, practices, and games can be overwhelming at times.
But it’s taught me so much about time management and taking care of my body.
I’ve learned to prioritize what’s best for me and the team.
I’ve also grown in understanding my role within the team and how I can contribute in the best way possible.
One of the biggest realizations I had as a student-athlete is how big of an impact we have on the community.
I became aware of how important it is to give back and spend time with the kids who look up to us.
I’ll cherish those moments forever.
Challenges and mental growth
I’ve faced some mental challenges along the way as well.
The pressure to perform on the court and not wanting to let my team down can be overwhelming at times.
But my teammates and coaches have been there for me every step of the way.
They’ve instilled confidence in me, supported me, and most importantly, trusted me.
With their help, I’ve overcome those mental challenges and grown as a player and person.
People who shaped the journey
Coach Len has had a tremendous impact on me during my time here.
From the moment I stepped on campus, he took me as I was and helped me become the player I wanted to be.
It wasn’t always easy, but it was exactly what I needed.
Off the court, he was always there for me, knowing that I was far away from home.
His family became a safe place to land, and I am so grateful for everything they have done for me.
I wouldn’t be the person I am today if it weren’t for Coach Len.
My teammates have also been a huge support system for me.
We’ve been through so much together, and they’ve become like family to me.
Being far away from home, I found a second home here in Wolfville.
Community and belonging
The Acadia community is the reason why my time here has been so incredible.
They took me in as one of their own and made me feel like I belong here.
All the kids I’ve coached, the supporters I see in Wolfville who take the time to talk to me, and the staff at Acadia who greet me with a smile—their kindness made being away from home so much easier.
It’s just so easy to love it here, and all the fans, alumni, and staff are the reason for that.
Defining moments
There are a few key moments that stand out to me during my time at Acadia.
Senior’s night in my first year was unforgettable.
The atmosphere was electric, and I had never experienced anything like it before.
Making it to nationals in my first year and finishing fifth in the country was also a huge accomplishment.
And just this past season, our Pink Game against STFX was a night to remember. The crowd was amazing, and the game-winner from Sarah was the cherry on top.
Lastly, my own senior night was incredibly special. It was my last game at the Stu, and the support was massive.
My dad even flew in all the way from Germany to be there.
I’ll never forget that night.
Perspective and advice
If I could give my first-year self or a future Acadia athlete any advice, it would be to trust the process.
Enjoy every moment because time flies by, and before you know it, you’ll want to be in your first year again.
And most importantly, don’t take the support of this community for granted.
Give back and show how grateful you are because they deserve it.
Looking ahead
As I look ahead to the next chapter of my life, I plan to play basketball professionally in Germany and pursue my MBA.
My time at Acadia has prepared me well for what’s next, and I feel ready to take on the world.
It won’t be the same as being here, but I trust that I can manage what’s next because of the lessons I’ve learned and the confidence I’ve gained at Acadia.
This experience is unique, and no other place has a community like this.
I’ll miss it like crazy, but I’ll definitely be back to support all my fellow Axewomen and Axemen.
Connection that lasts
In the end, it all comes back to the people and the connections I’ve made at Acadia.
I’ll never forget the impact this community has had on my life, and I’ll always be grateful for the support and love I’ve received.
The relationships I’ve built here will last a lifetime, and I’ll always consider Wolfville my second home.
Thank you, Acadia, for an incredible journey.
