From the Stands to the Court: Ashley Davis’ Axewomen Story
For Ashley Davis, Acadia was never just a university down the road.
For Ashley Davis, Acadia was never just a university down the road. The Kentville, N.S., native grew up watching the Axewomen from the stands before eventually wearing the jersey herself from 2023 to 2026. Now, after appearing in 25 conference games and preparing to graduate from Biology/Chemistry, Davis reflects on a journey shaped by injury, rediscovery, community and the full-circle pride of representing the program she once dreamed of joining.
Growing up in Kentville, right down the road from Acadia University, I was surrounded by the spirit of the Axewomen.
I attended countless games with my family, always looking up to the talented athletes on the court.
It was a dream of mine to one day wear the Acadia jersey and represent my hometown.
As I prepare to graduate, I reflect on the journey that brought me back to where it all began.
My story is not one of a straight path, but one of resilience, rediscovery, and the unwavering support of a community that shaped me into the person I am today.
The detour
After high school, I embarked on my first year of university at Memorial University in Newfoundland.
However, my time there was marred by a devastating ACL injury and a difficult experience being away from home.
It was a challenging period, and I found myself questioning my path and my place in the world.
Returning to Acadia was a decision born out of necessity but also a longing for familiarity and comfort.
Stepping onto the court for the first time in an Acadia jersey, I felt an overwhelming sense of pride.
It was a moment that made me realize what this university and community truly meant to me.
I was no longer the kid in the stands; I was now a part of something greater.
Finding purpose
My journey took an unexpected turn when I decided to take a year away from basketball.
It was during this time that Len, my coach, reached out and encouraged me to coach the U12 Axe Basketball girls.
Those young girls reignited my love for the game and reminded me of the impact I could have beyond the court.
In giving back, I found my purpose and a renewed sense of passion.
The people who have come into my life during my time at Acadia have been instrumental in my growth and success.
Len and Haley, my coaches, have been more than just mentors.
Haley, in particular, was a role model for me growing up, and to have the opportunity to be coached by her and build a relationship with her has been a dream come true.
My teammates, too, have become lifelong friends.
The laughter, inside jokes, and daily grind we shared are the memories I will cherish forever.
It is the relationships that have made this journey so meaningful.
Impact beyond the box score
As an athlete, I have learned that my impact goes beyond scoring points or grabbing rebounds.
I have embraced my role as a leader, using my voice and energy to bring the team together.
But perhaps my greatest source of pride is being a role model for young girls in the Valley.
If I can inspire just one of them to chase their dreams and work hard, then I have won as a person.
Being a student-athlete at Acadia has taught me invaluable lessons in time management and discipline.
Balancing academics and basketball was no easy feat, but it prepared me for the challenges that lie ahead.
More importantly, I have learned the importance of giving back and being a part of something bigger than myself.
The moments that matter most
Looking back, it is not the wins or losses that stand out, but the friendships and connections I have made along the way.
This past season, my final year, was especially meaningful.
The team had a light and fun vibe, and I cherished every moment on the court.
It was a reminder of why I fell in love with the game in the first place.
As I prepare to leave Acadia and embark on my next chapter, I carry with me the lessons and experiences that have shaped me.
I will be attending Dalhousie University to pursue a pharmacy program, and I am ready for the challenges that lie ahead.
Acadia has given me the confidence and skills to succeed, and I am grateful for the opportunities I have had.
Community connection
The impact of the Acadia community cannot be overstated.
The fans, alumni, and staff have played a significant role in my journey.
Seeing those U12 girls in the stands reminded me of why I am so lucky to be a student-athlete.
I hope to continue to inspire and give back to this community that has given me so much.
If I could offer any advice to my first-year self or future Acadia athletes, it would be to cherish every moment.
Time flies by, and before you know it, the ride is over.
Make connections, leave an impact, and remember that success is not always measured by wins and losses.
What it all meant
As I reflect on my journey at Acadia, I am filled with gratitude.
It has been a rollercoaster of highs and lows, but every moment has been worth it.
I am proud of the person I have become and the role I have played in this program.
Acadia will always hold a special place in my heart, and I am forever grateful for the opportunities and memories.
From a kid in the stands to a player on the court, I have come full circle.
It is a testament to the power of dreams, resilience, and the support of a community.
I hope that my journey can inspire others to chase their own dreams and make an impact in their own way.
