Heart of the Axe: Bianca Helmig
Little did I know that my dream of playing university basketball would one day lead me to the beautiful town of Wolfville, Nova Scotia.
The moment I left my home in Speyer, Germany, and boarded my flight to Canada, I knew my life was about to change forever.
I was starting a new chapter in my life and taking my basketball career to the next level.
I was so excited to embark on this new journey, but I had no idea what to expect.
All I knew was that I was ready to give it my all and see where this adventure would take me.
Now, as I enter my third year here at Acadia, I can’t help but look back at all the incredible experiences I’ve had so far and the person I’ve become.
This journey has taught me so much about the game of basketball, but more importantly, it has taught me about myself and what I’m capable of.
A dream come true
When I first started playing basketball at the age of seven, I never could have imagined the places this sport would take me.
As a little girl with big dreams, I always aspired to play basketball at the highest level and compete against the best players in the world.
But little did I know that my dream of playing university basketball would one day lead me to the beautiful town of Wolfville, Nova Scotia.
As I began my recruiting process and explored different opportunities, I came across Acadia University, and everything just felt right.
Coach Len Harvey reached out to me, and after just one Zoom call, I knew that Acadia was the perfect fit for me.
The way he spoke about the school, the community, and the incredible support system here made me realize that this was where I was meant to be.
I couldn’t wait to join the Axewomen family and officially become a part of this amazing community.
Embracing the journey
My first year at Acadia was truly a whirlwind of emotions and experiences.
From the excitement of moving to a new country to the challenges of balancing school and basketball, I had to quickly adapt to my new environment.
But one thing that made the transition so much easier was the incredible support I received from my coaches and teammates.
They welcomed me with open arms and made me feel like a part of the family from day one.
I’ll never forget the feeling of stepping onto the court for the first time in an Axewomen jersey, knowing that I had a whole team of people behind me, cheering me on every step of the way.
And that feeling only grew stronger as we continued to work together, practice together, and compete together.
In 2023, I was fortunate enough to experience the pinnacle of university basketball in Canada when we made it to nationals.
Although we fell short of our ultimate goal, the bond we formed as a team and the memories we created together will stay with me forever.
One of my favorite memories from that season was when we won our last consolation game and poured our drinks over Coach Len’s head in the locker room. The look on his face was priceless, and it was a celebration I’ll never forget.
For the love of the game
Being a part of the Axewomen family has been such a blessing, and I’m beyond grateful for the opportunity to play the sport I love at this level.
But more than that, this experience has taught me some of life’s most valuable lessons.
I’ve learned to never take anything for granted and to always embrace the present moment.
As I enter my third season here at Acadia, I can’t help but think about how quickly time has flown by.
In just a few short years, I’ll be graduating and moving on to the next chapter of my life.
But instead of dwelling on the future, I’ve learned to focus on the here and now.
I don’t know what the future holds, but I do know that I’m exactly where I’m meant to be, and I’m going to make the most of every moment.
I’m so grateful for this incredible journey I’ve been on, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds.
