Three Axewomen named AUS all-stars, Delorey earns Tracy MacLeod Award
The 2024-25 Atlantic University Sport (AUS) women’s basketball awards were announced Thursday, celebrating the best in the conference. The Acadia Axewomen had an impressive showing, with four players earning recognition for their outstanding performances this season.
Sarah Delorey honoured with Tracy MacLeod Award
Acadia’s Sarah Delorey received the Tracy MacLeod Award, which honours a women's basketball player who demonstrates determination, perseverance, and unwavering spirit to continue playing the game of basketball.
Delorey, a key contributor for the Axewomen, overcame adversity to play a crucial role in Acadia’s success this season. She averaged 11.8 points per game, shooting an impressive 57.5% from the field, while also contributing 7.6 rebounds per game, proving her resilience and leadership on and off the court.
“The myriad of injury issues Sarah has experienced haven't stopped her from playing, when many athletes with less resilience would have taken a different path,” said Axewomen head coach Len Harvey. “Sarah has been incredibly dedicated to her recovery in each instance and is currently playing the best basketball of her career. Sarah has been in our leadership group for the past two seasons and hasn't missed a beat as one of the primary leaders of our team throughout that time, even while she was dealing with injuries that were keeping her off the court.”
This marks sixth time an Acadia player has earned this honour. Most recently, current Axewomen standout Samantha Russell won in 2022-23.
Delorey now becomes the Atlantic conference nominee for the U SPORTS Tracy MacLeod Award. Former Acadia player Lanae Adams earned the national honour most recently in 2018-19.
All-star performers
Acadia had two players earn AUS all-star selections, solidifying their status as top competitors in the conference.
Samantha Russell was named an AUS first team all-star after an outstanding season, averaging 18.6 points per game, 9.8 rebounds per game, and showcasing a reliable offensive presence with a 35.5 per cent shooting percentage from the field. Harvey praised her versatility and selflessness.
“Sami’s performances have been fun to watch for everyone, but it’s her dedication to figuring out new ways to help us win and her humility to take on whatever role is needed that I’ve been most proud of her for.”
Bianca Helmig was named a second team all-star, demonstrating her versatility by averaging 16.5 points per game, 4.9 assists per game (fourth in U SPORTS), and shooting 80 per cent from the free-throw line. Harvey highlighted her growth throughout the season.
“I feel as though Bianca might be the most improved player in our conference this season. Her offensive development has been a huge reason for our success, and her rising level of confidence in herself and her leadership has been massive for us.”
Minelli shines as a freshman
Acadia’s Bianca Minelli made an immediate impact in her first season, earning a spot on the AUS all-rookie team. Minelli averaged 5.9 points per game, shooting 42.6 per cent from the field, and provided valuable minutes for the Axewomen in her debut season. Harvey praised her development and contributions.
“Minelli has been a fantastic addition to our team and is deserving of being part of a strong rookie team group. She has continued to develop her skills and confidence offensively, while providing some great defensive performances throughout the season. We're looking forward to her growth throughout her career.”
