Acadia in second place after two days at Kemp-Fry

HALIFAX – On day two of the Kemp-Fry Invitational, another AUS record fell, and several athletes hit the U SPORTS qualifying time.  

The evening got off to a quick start with Elodie Martin on UNB winning the 50m freestyle followed by Sara Bennett from Acadia and Dalhousie's Elaine Gentleman.  

The men were up next with Chris Weeks of Memorial setting a new AUS record in the 50m freestyle, touching the wall in a time of 22.52 seconds. Dalhousie's Noah Mascoll-Gomes and Acadia's Lucas Mazier were second and third respectively.  

It was a Tigers sweep of the women's 400m IM. Emilie Schofield touched the wall in first, followed by Kate Tuck and Ella Dobson. On the men's event, Acadia's Nate Thompson beat two Tigers to the wall touching in at 4:28.33. Morgan Sparkes and Alex Dalessio finished in second and third place.  

UNB's Emma Sinclair won the 100m butterfly, followed closely by Heidi Perry of Memorial and Acadia's Emma Hamlyn. Freddy Chandler-Baas of Dalhousie won the men's event with Weeks touching the wall in second and Dalhousie's Isaac Bahler in third.  

It was an Axewomen sweep of the 200m backstroke. Sophie Rooney touched in first followed by a tight battle between Grace Earle and Natalie Stokes, with Earle out-touching her teammate.  

Tiger Liam Ferguson won the 200m backstroke, touching the wall in 2:02.06, under the U SPORTS standard. Fellow Tiger Dalessio was second and Axeman Benjamin Henger was third.  

Acadia's Ella Collins won the women's 100m breaststroke. Mount Allison's Jordan Thomas was the first Mountie on a podium in the session, touching the wall in second, followed by Dalhousie's Ava Mackenzie.  

It was Acadia-Dal-Dal in the men's 100m breaststroke. Gordon Shortt touched the wall in a time of 1:01.96 making the U SPORTS standard in the event, and narrowly missing the AUS record. He was followed by Connor Maloney and Keilen Bellis from Dalhousie.  

UNB's Jessie Collett snuck on to the podium in third place in what was a Tigers-heavy women's 200m freestyle. Regan Crowell won the race with a U SPORTS qualifying time of 2:02.01. Tiger Emma Carrier Clarke finished in second.  

In a very close men's 200m freestyle race, two Tigers hit the U SPORTS standard. Noah Mascoll-Gomes touched in first with a time of 1:49.07 followed by Logan Sparkes. Memorial's Thomas Chafe finished in third.  

Acadia's Rooney won her second race of the night in the 50m backstroke. Fellow Axewoman Earle touched in second with Memorial's Ali Warren in third.  

In the final individual race of the night, Dalhousie's Ferguson also won his second race of the evening followed by Acadia's Henger in second and Memorial Matt LeCoure in third.   

The Dalhousie relay team of Crowell, Tuck, Carrier Clarke and Schofield won the 4x100m freestyle and narrowly missed out on the U SPORTS standard. Acadia's team of Rooney, Sara Benett, Danielle Moss, and Emma Hamlyn took second followed by UNB's Martin, Sophie Casey, Sinclair, and Collett finished third.  

On the men's side, Acadia out-touched Dalhousie 4x100m freestyle relay with Memorial touching the wall in third.  

The Tigers continue to lead in both the women's and men's standings and will look to capture the Kemp-Fry Invitational titles on Sunday.
