The Acadia Axemen (1-1-0) earned their first win of the Atlantic University Sport men's soccer season Sunday with a 3-1 victory over the Mount Allison Mounties (0-2-0) at Alumni Field.
Acadia set the tone early. Toni Adeoye opened the scoring in the fifth minute after a setup from Jabu Deng. Adeoye doubled the lead in the 30th minute, this time finishing a pass from AJ Magamura.
Magamura added to the first-half surge, scoring in the 38th minute off a feed from Sam Young. The Axemen went into halftime up 3-0.
The Mounties responded in the second half. Damon Gordon scored in the 71st minute to cut the lead to 3-1. Despite chances from both sides, that was as close as Mount Allison would get.
Acadia goalkeeper Connor Burns went the full 90 minutes. He faced two shots, making one save.
Adeoye led the Axemen with two goals on three shots, all on target. Magamura finished with one goal and one assist, converting his lone shot. Deng and Young each registered an assist.
The match was physical. Mount Allison's Tommy McCormick was booked in the 47th minute, and Liam Ewart followed with a yellow card two minutes later. Acadia's Akuzike Chipudhla was cautioned in the 78th minute.
With the win, Acadia moved to 1-1-0 in conference play. Mount Allison dropped to 0-2-0.
The Axemen visit the Dalhousie Tigers in Halifax on Sept. 5 before returning home for their opener against Mount Allison on Sept. 7 at Raymond Field.
