Axemen blank Huskies 7-0 in dominant home win
Acadia delivered a commanding performance Friday night, defeating Saint Mary's University 7–0 at home.
The Axemen scored three power-play goals and controlled play throughout, outshooting the Huskies 39–25 in a one-sided victory.
Kian Bell led the offence with a goal and three assists, including the game-winning marker, and finished with a plus-four rating. Brady Burns added a goal and an assist, scoring once on the power play, while also posting a plus-four night. Tyler Deline contributed a goal and an assist, with his goal coming on the man advantage.
In goal, Thomas Couture turned aside all 25 shots he faced to earn the shutout. The performance marked his fourth straight game with at least 25 saves, continuing a stretch of consistent play in the crease.
Acadia opened the scoring midway through the first period. Bell netted his first goal of the season at 10:59, finishing a play set up by Burns and Marc Boudreau. Roenick Jodoin doubled the lead at 16:55, giving the Axemen a 2–0 advantage after one period.
The second period saw Acadia extend the lead with three goals. Deline struck first at 5:49 on the power play, converting a setup from Liam Kidney and Bell. Bailey Peach added a shorthanded goal at 7:44, finishing a rush with Kidney providing the assist. Boudreau capped the scoring in the period at 12:30, finishing a play started by Corson Hopwo to push the lead to 5–0.
The Axemen added two more goals in the third period to close out the win. Burns scored at 3:16, finishing a feed from Bell and Brendan Tomilson for his first goal of the season. Brayden Schmitt added his first of the year at 12:26, with assists from Bell and Deline.
Saint Mary's generated chances throughout, but Acadia's defensive structure and Couture's steady play kept the Huskies off the scoreboard.
Connor Trenholm led Saint Mary's in the faceoff circle, winning eight of 16 draws. Gage Alexander made 11 saves in his start, while Marcus Vandenberg stopped 21 shots in relief.
Acadia now turns its attention to a rematch, hitting the road Wednesday night to face Saint Mary's again, this time in Halifax.
