Axemen come back to beat nationally ranked REDS
FREDERICTON, N.B. — Acadia rallied with three unanswered goals in the final 33 minutes to edge UNB 3–2 in AUS men's hockey on Saturday at the Aitken Centre. Goaltender Thomas Couture stopped 43 of 45 shots to earn first star honours.
UNB led 2–0 after the first period on goals by Braeden MacPhee at 16:05 and Cole Huckins at 18:18. Couture faced 13 shots in the opening frame and kept the deficit at two.
Acadia cut the lead in the second. At 7:37, defenceman Conor Shortall stepped into a loose puck and scored from the slot, with Kian Bell and Brady Burns drawing assists. Couture turned aside all 18 shots he faced in the period to keep it 2–1 after 40 minutes.
The Axemen completed the comeback in the third. Bell tied the game shorthanded at 4:06, finishing a two-on-one after a feed from Shortall. At 6:40, Marc Boudreau put Acadia ahead when he converted a loose puck in front; Zak Lavoie picked up the assist. Couture made 14 more saves in the final frame, including multiple stops through traffic on late pressure with the UNB net empty.
UNB held a 45–25 edge in shots but went 0-for-5 on the power play. Acadia finished 0-for-3 with the man advantage and scored the only special-teams marker of the night on Bell's shorthanded goal. Faceoffs favoured UNB 43–24. The Axemen blocked shots at key moments, with Shortall and Brendan Tomilson each recording important stops in the third.
Bell finished with a goal and an assist and was named the game's second star. MacPhee, who opened the scoring for UNB, was the third star.
Acadia improved to 6–2–1. UNB dropped to 4–4–1. The Axemen scored once at even strength, once shorthanded and sealed the win at five-on-five, closing lanes and clearing rebounds down the stretch. Couture's 43-save night anchored the performance.
Next up, Acadia visits first-place Saint Mary's on Wednesday in Halifax. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m.
