WOLFVILLE, N.S. — Dan Turner has been named the new goaltending coach for the Acadia University men’s hockey program.
Turner, originally from Kentville and now living in Halls Harbour, brings extensive experience to the position, having previously coached the U15 and U18 Wildcats from 2010 to 2015. He has also attended the Roger Nelson coaching clinic in Windsor, Ont., three times, participated in the NHL mentorship program in 2022-23, and attended both the NHL coaching conference in Nashville in 2023 and the East Coast Goaltender Convention in 2024.
“Dan will be a tremendous asset to our staff, our goalies and the entire development of young goalies in the Valley,” said Acadia men’s hockey head coach Darren Burns. “He has an infectious energy and a passion for the position. We are extremely impressed with how up to date he is, educating himself by studying the highest levels of goaltenders and attending conferences that focus on the position.”
Turner expressed his excitement about joining the Axemen.
“AUS hockey is one of the best hockey leagues in the country, so it’s a real honour to be part of the coaching staff,” Turner said. “Acadia has three returning goalies and one new recruit this year, all of whom come with high praise from Burnsy. It’s a real strength for the program. I’m excited to work with the group and be their person to lean on throughout the year.”
Turner emphasized the importance of having a dedicated goaltending coach on staff.
“Goaltending can be a lonely position. Most people in hockey would agree it’s like a different language compared to forward or defence,” he said. “It’s nice for the goalies to have someone on staff they know they can lean on, someone who can run goalie-specific practices each week and be an advocate for the group. I hope to fulfill that role for each of them.”
Turner’s connection to the community and his dedication to both the sport and the program make him a valuable addition to the Acadia men’s hockey team.
