Matt brings size and disruption to Axemen defensive line
Senior captain and provincial champion strengthens defensive front
The Axemen football program has added size and experience to its defensive line with the commitment of Weyburn, Sask., native E.J. Matt for the upcoming Atlantic University Sport season.
Matt, a 6'2, 205-pound defensive end, joins the Axemen after a decorated high school and club career in Saskatchewan. He plans to study law and society at Acadia.
Matt spent four seasons with the Weyburn Eagles, helping lead the program to consistent success. Over his career, the team compiled a 25-9 record, capturing a provincial championship and multiple league titles. He served as a senior team captain and was named the program’s lineman of the year.
He also gained significant experience with the Sask Selects program, competing internationally and helping the team win three international championships. That exposure provided opportunities to face high-level competition and further develop his game.
Matt’s performance on the field has been highlighted by his ability to disrupt opposing offences. During his senior season, he recorded multiple sacks and forced turnovers, including a game with two sacks and four forced fumbles. He has also produced several double-digit tackle performances and continued that momentum into spring competition, averaging a sack per game.
Matt said he is looking forward to beginning his U SPORTS career at Acadia.
“I am very excited to start my U SPORTS journey at the University of Acadia and I look forward to calling Wolfville home for the next few years,” he said. “I can’t wait to meet my teammates and coaches and step out onto the field for the first time. I think committing to Acadia was a great decision and it’s a great fit for me.”
