Inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2025
The 1987–88 Acadia Axemen men’s basketball team stands as one of the most accomplished groups in program history.
Under head coach Dave Nutbrown—named both AUS and CIS Coach of the Year—the Axemen combined elite talent with disciplined, unselfish play. They posted a dominant 17–1 regular-season record, captured the AUAA championship, and finished the year as national silver medalists, marking the season as one of the finest in garnet and blue.
The roster was both talented and selfless. Peter Morris earned AUS MVP, First Team All-Canadian, and CIS Tournament All-Star honours. First-year guard Wayne Taylor made an immediate impact as AUS Rookie of the Year. Kevin Veinot was named an AUS First Team All-Star and CIS Second Team All-Canadian, while Tyrone Carvery added CIS Tournament All-Star recognition. Beyond individual accolades, however, the team was defined by its bond—a no-quit attitude, daily accountability, and a brotherhood that extended well beyond game nights. They pushed each other in practice, trusted one another under pressure, and enjoyed being together off the court as teammates who became family.
Rather than a single postseason run, the Axemen established a relentless standard. Night after night, they played with toughness, composure, and belief. That identity was on full display on the national stage in the semifinal against perennial powerhouse Victoria, winners of seven of the previous eight national championships and owners of a formidable frontcourt. Few outside the locker room believed the upset was possible; everyone inside did. In a dramatic finish, Acadia earned a three-point victory that remains one of the defining moments in Axemen basketball history.
While the national title narrowly eluded them, the 1987–88 Axemen left no doubt about their legacy. Their impact is measured not only in wins and awards, but in how they represented Acadia—with heart, grit, and unity. Their induction into the Acadia Sports Hall of Fame affirms what they built together: the brotherhood, the sacrifice, the laughter, and the standard they set for future generations.
The 1987–88 Acadia Axemen men’s basketball team is proudly inducted into the Acadia Sports Hall of Fame, recognized for its excellence, character, and lasting influence on the program.
