Inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2025
Dr. James “Jim” MacLeod’s remarkable career and lasting legacy have helped shape athletic therapy at Acadia University and across Canada.
A Cape Breton native, MacLeod earned his master’s degree in sports medicine from Indiana State University in 1985 and his PhD from the University of Alberta in 1995. Certified as an athletic therapist since 1977, he was a lifelong member of the Canadian Athletic Therapists Association and was inducted into the CATA Hall of Fame in 2005.
MacLeod arrived at Acadia in 1981, accepting a part-time faculty position in the School of Physical Education while also serving as head athletic therapist for the varsity program. From the outset, he envisioned a pathway for students to learn and develop as professional athletic therapists—well before accredited programs existed in Canada.
His influence extended well beyond Wolfville. Within the Canadian Athletic Therapists Association, MacLeod served as vice-president, national president, and chair of the inaugural Program Accreditation Committee. In those roles, he helped establish national standards for accredited post-secondary athletic therapy programs, laying the foundation for what would eventually take shape at Acadia.
That long-term vision was realized in 2021 when Acadia’s School of Kinesiology earned CATA accreditation for its Athletic Therapy option. In 2023, the opening of the Jim MacLeod Athletic Therapy Clinic further cemented his legacy—an enduring tribute to more than four decades of service to Acadia, the Atlantic region, and the profession.
MacLeod also represented Canada on the international stage, serving as chief therapist at the 1988 Paralympic Games in Seoul and the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, and later as assistant chief therapist at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.
Remembered by students, colleagues, and athletes for his mentorship, passion for learning, and belief in the power of community, Dr. James MacLeod leaves an indelible mark on athletic therapy and education.
Acadia proudly honours Dr. James MacLeod—Professor Emeritus, program builder, mentor, and pioneer—through his induction into the Acadia Sports Hall of Fame.
