BUFFALO, N.Y. – Back when they were teenage roommates, Connor McDavid and Stephen Harper would ride up to Buffalo and watch the Sabres. They'd settle into their seats in KeyBank Center with the very real dream of playing in the NHL one day.
Six years later, McDavid is one of the league's marquee players. Harper is still holding onto the dream, but he's doing so now as a college graduate whose career path has taken more turns than he ever could have imagined.
Before McDavid arrived in Erie, Pa., to play for the Otters, the OHL team featured Harper as one of its top two forwards. He exploded into the organization with 24 goals as a 16-year old, one of the 50 best seasons in the history of the league for a player that age.
